Making a Mountain Out of a Mole Hill and Coping With It!

My daughter has entered 3rd grade this year.  She is doing very well!  Reading is her strong point.  In fact, she reads above her grade level.  However, this year she likes to make "mountains out of mole hills."

Last week, she was in tears stating that the quizzes and the end of her reading center books are too much to handle. "I just can't do it mom...no matter how hard I try."  Cue the tears.

I'll admit that my first thought is to grab her by the shoulders, shake her a bit and say "you are doing a great job in school; I don't know what you are so upset about; there is no need to cry."  Of course, this isn't what she wants to hear.

So we sit down together and draft an email to her teacher asking for assistance, tips and guidance.  Her teacher replies back that we can wait to discuss this at our already-scheduled parent teacher conference the following week.

I honestly think that her teacher was surprised with how big of a deal she was making this out to be because is doing a fantastic job in school.

We have decided that it is mostly because the harder the reading gets, the harder the quizzes at the end of the books get.  She is still searching for the answer written in stone, but she is rarely going to find it that way anymore, she'll have to search harder.

I have now gone with the "if you can't find the answer after 10 minutes, I'll help you approach BUT I am NOT going to give you the answer."  I have also explained that some questions are opinion questions; therefore, there is really no right or wrong answer.  So far...seems to be working!
